From 1603 to 1848, Le Moulin du Fourneau was a metallurgical plant called a blast furnace and produced tons of cast iron. The slags from blast furnace melting are co-products formed during the production of cast iron from iron ore. Depending on the cooling process of the molten slag, two families are distinguished: Crystallized slag, obtained by slow cooling in air, is an artificial and chemically stable hard rock. Vitrified slag obtained by sudden cooling in water, gives it a vitreous structure. This allows it to develop hydraulic properties. This water-cooled slag is called 'granulated slag'.
It is from these vitrified slags abundantly present in the ground of the mill of the furnace that Julien extracts “Nos Eclats de Fourneau”.
These are cut, polished completely or partially then mounted into jewelry.
